You might have guessed, after a lovely evening the Rain came last night and went on till we left the camp at 12h00 for our leisurely ride into Vienna. Arrived at hotel in the dry and it is a Four Star only 1.2km from museum and art centre of town. Got a bargain at Euro 70 per night. Ma needs a rest, me too, after 11 days non stop riding, so I booked for three nights, therefore we get two whole days of tourist stuff. Had great meal in Italian restaurant just down the road. Four star room now looks like a Cooper one with tents and washing drying all over the place. Breakfast here is 18 Euro each so we have shopped and are going to have a continental breakfast with our camping gear in the room. By the time we leave the room will be two star!
Today weather brill all day so we walked Vienna flat.
Went first to Kunst House museum/ gallery. Most unusual. Four floor block of flats re-designed by local artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Mad colours and no straight lines in the place. Even the floors curved up and down. Magical. Loads of his art in there too. Also a photo expo by Martin Parr, a Brit who does amazing pics of seemingly ordinary daily scenes but with huge impact. Google him for some surprises.
Then went to royal Albertina palace which has all the original staterooms and even better an art gallery over four floors with loads of picasso, chagal, Kandinsky, lautrect, Renoir etc etc. Took hours to get round. In stock, they have a million pieces but a tiny fraction on show, obviously.
Lunch of coffee and cake in between. Then on to an old bookshop. I bought a Neil Gaiman.
Dinner of Wiener Tafelspitz round the corner from our hotel. Excellent and huge.
Rode 82ks from Vienna to Bratislava, Slovakia. Country number ?
After all the rich countries, what a shock. There are loads of Ferraris and Bentley’s in this new economy but there is loads of poor people. The impact of the commy country is all over, especially in the back streets where we ended up. I would love to spend more time here, but have to move on.
I was not certain of camping so booked a hotel on line for Euro 50. Four star nogal. I asked by email for a place to park the bikes. They replied and said I could put them in the ski store. Why was I so stupid! Ski means big hill!!!!!! So we ended up pushing bikes for 5 ks up to the biggest hill in Slovakia. Ma not amused but loves hotel. Spent more on dinner and vino than accommodation.
Downhill start tomorrow, look on the bright side.
